Carnival 2002 - Celebrating Britain

News - Focus, February 2002

ST MARY’S VILLAGE CARNIVAL 2002
COME AND CELEBRATE WITH US!

Summer may still feel a long way off – but 6th July and this year’s St Mary’s Village Carnival will soon be upon us! This year, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, the theme is ‘Celebrating Britain’ – and to make it the best carnival yet, we need you!

The theme will be reflected in the day’s programme, with plenty to celebrate on Edlesborough Green and in the Carnival Procession. As well as all the usual stalls and amusements, the Carnival Committee is planning plenty of displays (mainly free!) including Maypole, Morris and Scottish dancing, an Animal Farm, Hot Air Balloon, Shire Horses, children’s amusements and chainsaw carving which should provide entertainment for young and old alike, as well as raising valuable funds for local charities. So for a great day out, book Saturday 6th July in your diary now!

Carnival Queen

A highlight of the Carnival is the Carnival Procession through Eaton Bray and Edlesborough villages. As well as being a great way for local organisations, friends and businesses to have fun making up a float, (for which the best floats win prizes) the procession also includes a number of classic cars and is led by the Carnival Queen and her retinue. Selection of the Carnival Queen will take place on Sunday 21st April at 11.30am in Eaton Bray Village Hall and is open to children aged 8-12 from St Mary’s congregation, or from the villages of Dagnall, Eaton Bray, Edlesborough and Northall. Entry forms are available from Catherine Evans.

Joining in with the Carnival

As well as coming to the Carnival on 6th July, there are plenty of ways to join in:

  • Carnival Procession – enter a float in the Carnival Procession.
Whether you enter as a local organisation, a business or simply a group of friends or neighbours, this makes a great contribution and you could win a prize for your efforts – as well as free publicity for your organisation or business. Don’t worry if you haven’t got transport – contact one of the Carnival Committee (via the website or see below) – we can probably put you in touch with someone who has!
  • Run a stall – Many local organisations already run stalls on The Green.
If you would like to do so, the new point of contact this year is Robert Tigg.
  • Advertise in the Carnival programme - Copy for this year’s programme is required by mid-April.
If you would like to advertise please get in touch with Gordon Gray.
  • Carnival Sponsors – we are looking for sponsors for some of the attractions at the 2002 carnival.
You can help in many ways – make a donation, donate a prize for the Grand Draw, lend a lorry (ideally low-sided) for the procession or advertise your business in the Carnival Programme.
  • Help out – on the day, or lend equipment, such as gazebos, tents, lorries etc.

Finding Out More

This year, a new website, holds details of all the entertainment on offer at the Carnival and explains how to get involved. Alternatively, contact one of the Carnival Committee such as Gordon Gray (Chairman) or Robert Tigg (Charity Stalls) or Alison Walley (Publicity).

Above all, join us in Celebrating Britain on 6th July on Edlesborough Green!
