Carnival 2002 - Celebrating Britain

Reverend Malcolm Grant

Very Reverend Malcolm Grant. The Very Reverend Malcolm Grant will be instituted as Vicar of Eaton Bray with Edlesborough on July 3. He comes to us from Inverness, where for almost 11 years he has been Provost of St Andrew's Cathedral, a job which is mainly that of a parish priest but which includes a range of diocesan responsibilities as well. For the first six years of that time he was also Priest in charge of St Mary's, Culloden, a new town development, where the first stage of a permanent church building was opened in 1993, and Rector of St Paul's, Strathnairn, a scattered rural charge covering a large area to the east of Loch Ness.

He is married to Katrina, who has been working as a civil servant in the Animal Health Department, and they have two children, Alison (15) and lain (12). His mother still lives in Dunfermline (just north of Edinburgh), where he went to school.

Before moving to Inverness, Malcolm spent ten years as Provost of St Mary's Cathedral, Glasgow, and three years before that as Priest in charge of St Ninian's, Invergordon (even further north than Inverness), where he also had charge of the training of non stipendiary clergy. Training for ministry (both clerical and lay) has always been a major interest of his, as has exploring new forms of ministry to release the talents of the whole Church in its outreach and concern for people. Almost a quarter of century's involvement with cathedrals has given him a deep interest in liturgy, and he is looking forward to the developments in our services that "Common Worship" will make possible.

In the '70's he was a member of the Grantham Team Ministry, with charge of a large housing estate, recognized as an area of multiple deprivation. There he worked closely with Social Services and other agencies in community projects, and served as Chairman of Governors of St Hugh's C.E. (Controlled) Secondary School. The creation of a new team ministry was an interesting challenge as was building (and paying for) a new church centre for the estate. The local R.C. congregation also worshipped in that church, and this was the start of an increasing involvement in work for Christian unity.

He trained for the ministry in Edinburgh, taking degrees in Chemistry and then Divinity at Edinburgh University, and gained his early experience in ordained ministry at St Mary's Cathedral, Glasgow.

Spare time interests include photography, music, reading and architecture, and he has a long standing involvement in peace and justice and ecological concerns.
