Carnival 2006 - Films
Classic Cars
The early cars tended to fall into two categories, very basic for the common man and, very grand for the wealthy. Indeed many of the wealthy did not drive, they had a resident chauffeur. A Lady driver was considered very daring.
These cars are very different from the modern ones we see on the road today. They just do not have any of the modern driving aids, such as rear window demisting, ABS, power steering and Sat Nav. As such the cars really need a great deal of concentration to drive them. However as early as the 1920's a few expensive cars had a automatic gearbox and very few, had a car radio.
Cars built before the 1930's ran on lead free petrol, as fuel made before the 1930's had no lead. These cars run quite well on today's modern fuels. You will see some of the later cars have no seat belts as this was not made compulsory until the 1970's.
Many of these cars, tractors and bikes were rescued from old sheds and barns and then restored. Please come and have a look, and talk with their owners.
Some of the vehicles will take part in a display in the main ring later in the afternoon.
