Hospice At Home Volunteers
What do the Volunteers do
The Volunteers visit, give practical help where it's needed and become a supporting friend during the illness and - if required - beyond.
The Volunteers aim to complement the statutory services such as Community Nurses, Macmillan Nurses, Social Workers, Hospices and Home Carers to support the patient and their family.
The amount of time given by the Volunteer each week depends on the agreed needs of the individual patient.
There is no limit placed on the length of time given by Volunteers in supporting both the patient and their family.
Who are the Volunteers?
Caring people who may have experinced the need for help and support themselves. All volunteers are carefully selected, trained and managed by the Volunteers Organiser.
Can we help you?
If you are confined to your home by illness you may need extra practical help, or a regular visitor to talk to.
Caring for someone you love at home can be tiring and isolating. A Volunteer can relieve the carer, giving them time to see their friends, go shopping or simply relax.
Whatever you need, we hope we can help. Please telephone us or speak to your Doctor, Community Nurse, Macmillan Nurse or Social Worker. Or, if you prefer, you can call us direct.
Which areas do we cover?
Hospice at Home Volunteers works from five centres in Bedfordshire:
- Luton
- Dunstable & Houghton Regis
- Leighton Buzzard & Linslade and the surrounding districts
- Bedford & District
- Ampthill & District
What is the organisation?
Hospice at Home Volunteers has been working in the community since 1986 as a free and completely confidential service.
Many people prefer to be cared for in their own homes. With the increased emphasis on care in the community, Hospice at Home Volunteers in an integral part of that care.
The Volunteers Organiser, when asked visits the patient and family first to discuss their needs and then introduces a Volunteer, if appropriate.
There is always close co-operation with any other professional service already involved.
The Hospice at Home Volunteer groups are not directly associated with or funded through any in-patient Hospice in the area.
Each group relies on the generosity of its community for help, and needs financial support to continue its vital work.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
